Roscoe Mitchell

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell from Chicago was one of the first members of the AACM. In 1966 he recorded Sound, the first album by an AACM musician. Besides saxophone and trumpet, it features bells, whistles, harmonica and silence. His group grew into the Art Ensemble of Chicago, with the trumpeter Lester Bowie, the saxophonist Joseph Jarman and the bassist Malachi Favors; later the drummer Famoudou Don Moye joined. Mitchell plays all the saxophones, from soprano to bass, and also writes for orchestra. He taught for years at Mills College in California.
