Saxofonist Roscoe Mitchell uit Chicago was een van de eerste leden van de AACM. In 1966 nam hij Sound op, het eerste album van een AACM-musicus. Daarop klinken naast saxofoon en trompet ook bellen, fluitjes, harmonica en stilte. Uit zijn groep groeide het Art Ensemble of Chicago, met trompettist Lester Bowie, saxofonist Joseph Jarman en bassist Malachi Favors; later kwam drummer Famoudou Don Moye erbij. Mitchell speelt alle saxofoons, van sopraan tot bas, en schrijft ook voor orkest. Hij gaf jarenlang les aan Mills College in Californië.
