Sound (1966) van het Roscoe Mitchell Sextet was een van de eerste albums van AACM-musici, uitgebracht door het Chicagose label Delmark. De titel was een programma. Het ging Mitchell niet om akkoorden en solo's, maar om klank: stiltes, losse tonen, kleine instrumenten en plotselinge uitbarstingen.

De AACM, de Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, werd in 1965 in Chicago opgericht door zwarte musici die hun eigen muziek wilden maken en uitbrengen. Uit die kring kwam in 1969 ook het Art Ensemble of Chicago voort.
