Hey Donald
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Hey Donald was recorded in 1994 and released on the label Delmark. It was the first recording of a quartet with pianist Jodie Christian, bassist Malachi Favors and drummer Albert Tootie Heath, built around saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell. The album is dedicated to Donald Myrick, saxophonist of Earth, Wind and Fire.
The leader plays alto, tenor, soprano and sopranino saxophone and flute. According to AllMusic, he saves the more bop-like pieces for his tenor saxophone, while his soprano, with an intense sound, conjures up a kind of drone, somewhat reminiscent of bagpipes. The album contains twelve tracks, also by the quartet members themselves and by Lester Bowie. The Penguin Guide to Jazz was more mixed: when the rhythm section plays tightly in time and lays down a groove, the honking of the saxophone sometimes sounds downright ridiculous.
