Secret Story

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Secret Story was released in 1992 and is regarded as one of Pat Metheny's most ambitious studio projects. He wrote all the music himself, except for one track on which he shares the credit, and blended jazz, rock and world music. It was recorded in 1991 and 1992 at the Power Station in New York, and the orchestra was recorded at Abbey Road Studio One in London. Jeremy Lubbock conducted the orchestral arrangements. Other contributors were the Pinpeat Orchestra of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia, the choir of the Cambodian royal palace, harmonica player Toots Thielemans and, on two tracks, pianist Lyle Mays.

The opening track Above the Treetops is an adaptation of a Cambodian spiritual song. The Japanese pianist and singer Akiko Yano can be heard on As a Flower Blossoms (I Am Running to You), the only track with a second composer. The album won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album in 1993. He then toured with it.
