Abbey Road
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Abbey Road · After the tense sessions for Get Back, Paul McCartney suggested to producer George Martin that they make an album like the old days. Martin agreed, on condition that the group stuck to discipline. Recording ran mainly in April, July and August 1969. The mood was better than a year earlier with the White Album, but there were still conflicts, over Maxwell's Silver Hammer among other things, and John Lennon was absent for some songs. It was the last album the band recorded.
The sound mixes rock, pop, blues and progressive rock, with striking use of the Moog and of guitar through a Leslie speaker. On the second side a long medley of short songs runs together. George Harrison wrote Something and Here Comes the Sun, two of his best songs for the group. The first reviews were mixed, but later the album grew into one of the best of all time.
