Yellow Submarine

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Yellow Submarine belongs to the 1968 animated film and was released in January 1969. For the band it was mainly a contractual obligation: United Artists wanted four new songs for the film, and the group, just finished with Sgt. Pepper, showed little enthusiasm. Some songs were recorded specially, others had been left over from earlier.

Only the first side contains songs by The Beatles themselves: four new ones, plus the previously released Yellow Submarine and All You Need Is Love. George Harrison's Only a Northern Song is about his dissatisfaction with the group's music publisher. John Lennon's Hey Bulldog ends with a jam that stayed in the final mix. The second side consists of orchestral music by George Martin, recorded with an orchestra of 41 musicians at Abbey Road. Critics reacted mixed: some felt that the album fell below the group's usual level.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the end of Hey Bulldog. Notice what happens after the point where the song could have faded out: the band lets loose for a little longer.
