Offramp

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Offramp is the third studio album by the Pat Metheny Group, recorded in October 1981 and released by ECM in May 1982. The producer was Manfred Eicher. After working with the Brazilian percussionist Naná Vasconcelos on the album As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls, Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays brought his voice and percussion to this record. It was the first album to feature the Roland GR-300 guitar synthesizer, which became a signature instrument of Metheny's. Steve Rodby replaced bassist Mark Egan. The title track is a tribute to Ornette Coleman, and James was inspired by James Taylor.

Offramp was also the group's first album with vocals. It was well received and sold well. It won a Grammy in 1983 and was the first of ten Grammys for the group.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Offramp and notice the guitar synthesizer. Try to hear how the group sounds freer here, in the spirit of Ornette Coleman.
