Dis

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The saxophonist Jan Garbarek recorded Dis in December 1976 for the ECM label. The album was released in May 1977. The producer was Manfred Eicher, the recording was done by Jan Erik Kongshaug. Garbarek plays soprano and tenor saxophone and wooden flute. He is accompanied by the American guitarist Ralph Towner on twelve-string and classical guitar. In Skygger the Norwegian brass ensemble Den Norske Messingsekstett joins in. On Vandrere, Viddene and Dis a wind harp can also be heard, an instrument played by the wind itself.

The Penguin Guide to Jazz included Dis in its list of recommended core recordings.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Dis and notice the wind harp. Hear how that soft, wind-played sound blends with the saxophone and the guitar.
