Aftenland

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Aftenland is an album by the Norwegian saxophonist and composer Jan Garbarek and the organist Kjell Johnsen. They recorded it in December 1979 in the Engelbrekt Church in Stockholm. The album was released the following year on ECM.

It is a duo record with an unusual line-up. Garbarek plays soprano and tenor saxophone and wooden flute, Johnsen plays the church's pipe organ. They wrote all nine pieces together, with titles such as Syn, Linje, Enigma and Iskirken. They are both short and long: Linje lasts less than two minutes, Kilden just over seven. AllMusic gave the album two stars.
