Carla Bley

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Carla Bley, from Oakland, worked as a young woman as a cigarette seller at the jazz club Birdland. There she heard the music she wanted to write. In the early 1960s her pieces were played by Paul Bley, to whom she was married, and by George Russell and Jimmy Giuffre. In 1964 she was one of the founders of the Jazz Composers Guild. With Charlie Haden she created the Liberation Music Orchestra and with her later partner Michael Mantler the Jazz Composer's Orchestra. Escalator over the Hill (1971) is a jazz opera of almost two hours with lyrics by Paul Haines. Her music is often humorous and draws on the tango, marches and hymns.
