Dinner Music
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Carla Bley recorded Dinner Music in 1976 and it was released in 1977 on the label Watt, in association with ECM. She plays organ, piano and tenor saxophone, and sings. The line-up is large and remarkable: Roswell Rudd on trombone, Bob Stewart on tuba, Richard Tee on piano, Steve Gadd on drums and guitarists Cornell Dupree and Eric Gale, among others.
The record has eight tracks, from Sing Me Softly of the Blues to A New Hymn. Michael G. Nastos of AllMusic called the album a first excursion down a funky path, impeccably executed and almost indispensable. In Dining Alone the lyrics are by Bley and John Hunt.
