Social Studies

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Carla Bley recorded Social Studies in 1980. The album was released in 1981 on the label Watt/ECM. She plays organ and piano and leads a large group of wind players: trumpet, saxophones, clarinet, euphonium, trombone and tuba. Steve Swallow plays bass guitar and D. Sharpe drums. The album has six tracks, from almost five to almost thirteen minutes.

The longest track is Reactionary Tango, a piece in three parts that she wrote together with Swallow. Reviewer Alex Henderson called the album adventurous and unconventional, and the Penguin Guide to Jazz wrote that the bookish sleeve conceals wonderfully dry music.

Listening tip. Listen to Reactionary Tango and notice how the piece is built in three parts and how the horns take turns.
