Sextet

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Sextet was released in 1987 on the label Watt/ECM. The album was made with a six-piece group: Carla Bley on organ and synthesizer bass, Larry Willis on piano, Hiram Bullock on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass guitar, Victor Lewis on drums and Don Alias on percussion. All six pieces were written by the bandleader herself. They each last from just over six to just over seven and a half minutes.

The AllMusic reviewer heard a polished, golden sound that suits the ECM style well. The Penguin Guide to Jazz gave the album two and a half stars. It is a calm and carefully made album, made by a small group who give one another space.

Listening tip. Listen to More Brahms and notice how organ and piano share the space with guitar and bass.
