Tropic Appetites
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Tropic Appetites was released in 1974, as a follow-up to her debut Escalator over the Hill. The lyrics are by her friend Paul Haines and are about his travels through Southeast Asia in the preceding years. Unlike the orchestral Escalator, the line-up here is an octet, with Julie Tippetts as singer.
The record contains eight pieces, ranging from the short In India, which lasts a little over a minute, to What Will Be Left Between Us and the Moon Tonight? and Song of the Jungle Stream, which both last more than ten minutes. Bley herself plays organ, piano, marimba and much more, and produced the record together with Michael Mantler. The line-up includes Dave Holland on bass and Paul Motian on drums, among others.
