From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Marcin Wasilewski is a Polish jazz pianist and composer, born in Sławno in 1975. He met the bassist Sławomir Kurkiewicz at the music school in Koszalin and from then on they played jazz together. In 1991 they started a trio of their own. In 1993 the drummer Michał Miskiewicz joined and so the Simple Acoustic Trio was formed, which recorded on small Polish labels.
Music and breakthrough
The trumpeter Tomasz Stańko discovered the young musicians. He took them on tour and in 2001 made the trio his regular band. With him they recorded, among others, Soul of Things in 2001, Suspended Night in 2003 and Lontano in 2005. In 2004 their own career took off, when as the Simple Acoustic Trio they were allowed to record an album for ECM Records. Among others January in 2008, Faithful in 2011 and Spark of Life in 2014, with the saxophonist Joakim Milder, followed. In 2020 Arctic Riff appeared, with Joe Lovano. They also toured as accompanists to Manu Katché.
Influence
The trio plays acoustic jazz in the ECM tradition, with a great deal of space, silence and lyricism, a sound that belongs to the European jazz of recent decades. Wasilewski shows that a trio that has played together since youth can make music with almost telepathic insight.
