Nouvelle vague
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Nouvelle vague · In the late 1950s young French film critics started making films themselves: cheap, on location and free in form. The music became freer too. For Louis Malle's Ascenseur pour l'échafaud, Miles Davis improvised the music with his group in December 1957 while the images were projected. Martial Solal wrote jazz for À bout de souffle (1960). Georges Delerue worked for François Truffaut, on Jules et Jim among others, and for Jean-Luc Godard. His sad string theme interrupts Le mépris (1963) again and again. With Jacques Demy, Michel Legrand made Les parapluies de Cherbourg (1964), a film in which all the dialogue is sung.
