Michel Legrand

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Michel Legrand studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Nadia Boulanger and then became a jazz arranger. In 1958 he made the album Legrand Jazz with, among others, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. In the nouvelle vague he wrote for Agnès Varda, Jean-Luc Godard and above all Jacques Demy. Les parapluies de Cherbourg (1964) by Demy is sung throughout, even the ordinary dialogue. Legrand built the film from jazz harmony and recurring melodies. In Les demoiselles de Rochefort (1967) he opted for swing and big dance numbers. In Hollywood he won an Oscar for The Windmills of Your Mind from The Thomas Crown Affair (1968).
