Pop jazz, lounge and crime TV (Mancini school)

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Pop jazz, lounge and crime TV (Mancini school) · Henry Mancini, trained at Juilliard and for years employed by the music department of Universal, wrote the music for the TV series Peter Gunn in 1958. The cool combination of a repeated bass line, jazz horns and guitar also became a hit on record. Mancini then made the light, elegant jazz of Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), with the song ‘Moon River’, and of The Pink Panther (1963), with Plas Johnson's creeping tenor saxophone. The Argentine jazz pianist Lalo Schifrin wrote a theme in 5/4 time for Mission: Impossible (1966). This music was intended for film and television, but also for the record player at home.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the repeated bass line beneath a cool melody in saxophone or brass, and the 5/4 time in Schifrin.
