John Barry

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

John Barry, from York, led the pop group The John Barry Seven in the late 1950s. For Dr. No (1962) he arranged the James Bond theme by Monty Norman, with its famous twang guitar. He went on to write the music for eleven Bond films. With Goldfinger (1964) he fixed the Bond sound: sharp brass, jazz chords and a big title song. In The Ipcress File (1965) he used a cimbalom. Later his style became broader and more romantic, with long string melodies. Barry won five Oscars: two for Born Free (1966), and others for The Lion in Winter (1968), Out of Africa (1985) and Dances with Wolves (1990).

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the brass chords and jazz harmony in the Bond music, and the slow, broad string melodies in his later work.
