Michael Giacchino

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Michael Giacchino (born in New Jersey in 1967) studied film and first worked at game studios. For the game Medal of Honor (1999) he wrote a full orchestral score, still unusual for games at the time. Through J.J. Abrams he moved into television, with Alias and Lost (2004). For Pixar he made The Incredibles (2004), in the style of the big-band spy music of the 1960s. For Up (2009) he won an Oscar. The theme Married Life is a waltz that tells the story of an entire marriage in a few minutes. For The Batman (2022) he built everything from a four-note motif. Giacchino thinks in strong themes.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen in Married Life to how a single waltz melody changes from playful to sad, through instrumentation, tempo and harmony alone.
