Pixar and digital animation

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Pixar and digital animation · Toy Story (1995) was the first feature-length film animated entirely by computer. For it, Pixar deliberately chose music with a human, warm sound. Randy Newman wrote songs and a score with American roots: honky-tonk piano, swing and a touch of Copland. Later the studio worked with more composers. In Finding Nemo (2003) and WALL-E (2008), Thomas Newman used unusual instruments and small tone colours. For The Incredibles (2004), Michael Giacchino wrote a big band score that recalls spy films of the 1960s. For Up (2009) he won an Oscar, with a simple waltz that tells an entire marriage in the opening montage. At Pixar, music often carries the emotion that the images show without words.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to 'Married Life': a single waltz melody is orchestrated differently each time, from playful to fragile, as the couple's life passes by.
