John Powell

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

John Powell was born in London in 1963 and studied violin at Trinity College of Music. He first wrote music for advertising and was an assistant to Patrick Doyle. In 1997 he moved to Los Angeles, where Face/Off became his first major film. With Harry Gregson-Williams he wrote Antz (1998) and Chicken Run (2000). For The Bourne Identity (2002) he first made a score without orchestra, with percussion, guitars and electronics. Later a string section was added. He continued that action style in the following Bourne films. He also wrote a great deal of music for animated films, such as Kung Fu Panda with Hans Zimmer and How to Train Your Dragon (2010), for which he received an Oscar nomination.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the contrast between the driving rhythms of percussion, guitar and electronics in the Bourne films and the broad orchestral melodies in the animated films.
