Remote Control: hybrid orchestra and electronics

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Remote Control: hybrid orchestra and electronics · Hans Zimmer came out of the European pop world and at first worked mainly with synthesizers. After Rain Man (1988), he built a studio in Santa Monica with a team of composers, first called Media Ventures and later Remote Control Productions. The way of working resembles an atelier: Zimmer devises themes and tone colour, and his collaborators work out scenes. The sound combines orchestra, choir and electronics, with heavy percussion, ostinatos in the strings and simple chord sequences that grow steadily fuller. Crimson Tide (1995) and Gladiator (2000) set the tone. Zimmer wrote The Dark Knight (2008) together with James Newton Howard. Inception (2010) is built on slowed-down music by Édith Piaf. Composers such as Klaus Badelt, Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell came out of this atelier.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the repeated pattern in the strings and how the music grows bigger not through new melodies but through layers, percussion and volume.
