Trailer music and epic music

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Trailer music and epic music · A trailer has to sell a whole film in two minutes. Often the film music is not yet ready, so specialised companies make their own trailer music. Two Steps from Hell, founded in 2006 by Thomas Bergersen and Nick Phoenix, at first supplied only film studios. Such pieces usually follow a fixed form in three parts: a quiet opening, a build-up with percussion and ostinato, and a big finale with choir and orchestra. Around the trailers for Inception (2010), the low, metallic ‘braam’ sound became a cliché. Zack Hemsey wrote ‘Mind Heist’ for the third Inception trailer. Later, these makers released their music on albums for a wide audience. In this way epic music grew into a genre in its own right, with its own fans and concerts.

Listening

Listening tip. Follow the form in three steps: quiet opening, build-up with drums and repeated figures, and a climax in which choir and brass give everything at once.
