Clint Mansell

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Clint Mansell was born in Coventry in 1963. For ten years he was the singer, guitarist and songwriter of the British band Pop Will Eat Itself. After that he began a long collaboration with the director Darren Aronofsky, from Pi (1998) and Requiem for a Dream (2000) to The Fountain (2006), Black Swan (2010) and Noah (2014). Mansell has no classical training. He builds his music the way a rock band does, with drums, bass, guitar and a melody line, and works with orchestrators. For Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain the Kronos Quartet played his music. The piece Lux Aeterna was afterwards used in many film trailers. He also wrote the music for Duncan Jones's Moon (2009).

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the short, constantly repeated motif that slowly grows fuller and louder, and the mix of string quartet, electronics and rock rhythms.
