American indie film

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

American indie film · From the 1980s an independent American cinema with small budgets grew up in New York and around the Sundance festival. The music therefore had to be clever and economical. With Blood Simple (1984) Carter Burwell began a long collaboration with the Coen brothers. For Fargo (1996) he adapted a Norwegian folk melody. Angelo Badalamenti gave the films of David Lynch, beginning with Blue Velvet (1986), a dreamy, slow sound of strings and synthesizers. Thomas Newman built the score of American Beauty (1999) from marimbas, tablas and other percussion. Typical features are small ensembles, repetition as in minimal music and an ironic or alienating tone.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the small line-up and the repeated patterns that set a mood instead of a big theme.
