American Beauty
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
American Beauty · This album came out in November 1970, shortly after Workingman's Dead, and continued the folk and country of that album. The songwriters Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter were in a fertile period, and now other band members wrote as well: Phil Lesh with Box of Rain, Bob Weir with Sugar Magnolia and Pigpen with Operator. The recording began shortly after it emerged that the manager Lenny Hart had renewed the contract with Warner without the group's knowledge and had disappeared with a good part of the money. The studio engineer Stephen Barncard took over the production from Bob Matthews.
Garcia played less lead guitar and more pedal steel. The mandolin player David Grisman plays on Friend of the Devil and above all on Ripple. The sound is mainly acoustic, with major-key melodies and folk harmonies, under the influence of Dylan and the studio neighbours Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Rolling Stone placed the album at number 258 of the 500 best albums in 2003.
