Aoxomoxoa

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Aoxomoxoa · This third studio album by the Grateful Dead came out in 1969 and was recorded twice. The first version, with the working title Earthquake Country, went in the bin when Ampex released the first 16-track recorder. The band spent eight months in the studio, partly to experiment with the new technology, and that cost a fortune. It was also the first album on which the lyricist Robert Hunter took part fully, alongside Jerry Garcia. For the first time an acoustic side of the band was heard, for example in Mountains of the Moon and Dupree's Diamond Blues. Garcia sang lead on every track.

The result is psychedelic rock full of overdubs, choirs and electronic sounds. Of the songs, only China Cat Sunflower remained a staple on the stage. Rolling Stone wrote enthusiastically about the music in 1969. In 1971 Garcia and Lesh remixed the album, in which much of the experimental material disappeared.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Mountains of the Moon and notice how acoustic and restrained the band sounds here, very different from the long live improvisations.
