Anthem of the Sun

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Anthem of the Sun, the second album by the Grateful Dead, was released on 18 July 1968. The recording began in late 1967 in Los Angeles with the producer David Hassinger and moved to New York. Hassinger dropped out, because the group worked too slowly and too experimentally. Back in San Francisco the members also recorded their concerts. Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and the sound engineer Dan Healy spliced those live recordings together with studio tracks into a new whole. In this way an album came about that is neither a pure studio album nor a live record.

The group also used, among other things, prepared piano, harpsichord, kazoo and timpani. Tom Constanten brought ideas from John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen. It was the first album with the second drummer Mickey Hart. Warner Bros. called the project the most unreasonable thing the company had ever done. Rolling Stone later included it in its list of the five hundred best albums.

Listening tip. Listen to Alligator and notice the jam section after the vocals. That part comes from a live performance and was attached to the studio recording.
