Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young was a group of four songwriters from well-known bands. David Crosby had been fired from The Byrds in late 1967, Stephen Stills came from Buffalo Springfield and Graham Nash from the British band The Hollies. At a party in Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles in 1968, the three discovered how good their voices sounded together. In 1969 Neil Young joined them, like Stills a former member of Buffalo Springfield. The group stands for Californian folk rock and for close harmony: singing in which the voices lie very close together.

Music and breakthrough

The debut Crosby, Stills & Nash (1969) produced Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Marrakesh Express. With Young, the group played the Woodstock festival in August 1969, according to Stills only their second time in front of an audience. Déjà Vu (March 1970) reached number 1 in America and became their best-selling album. It includes Our House, which Nash wrote in Joni Mitchell's house in Laurel Canyon, where the two lived together. Mitchell's Woodstock is on it too, in a hard-driving rock version. After the shootings at Kent State University in May 1970, in which the National Guard killed four students, Young wrote Ohio.

Influence

The 1970 tour, captured on the live album 4 Way Street (1971), was overshadowed by quarrels, and the group broke up soon afterwards. Crosby, Stills & Nash were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997; Young is inducted separately, as a solo artist and with Buffalo Springfield. Crosby died in 2023. With Ohio and Woodstock, the group gave a voice to the protest and counterculture of around 1970.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Our House (1970) and notice the harmony singing in the chorus. Nash sings the melody, while Crosby and Stills place their voices right alongside it. Underneath, Nash himself plays piano and harpsichord.
