Déjà vu
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Déjà vu · It was the second album by Crosby, Stills & Nash and the first with Neil Young on board. They recorded it between July 1969 and January 1970 at Wally Heider's studios in San Francisco and Hollywood. The mood was dark: relationships were over, and David Crosby wept in the studio over the death of his girlfriend Christine Hinton. Most of the songs were recorded separately by the members, and the work took, according to Stephen Stills, about eight hundred hours. Carry On, by contrast, was finished in eight hours.
The album contains Teach Your Children, with Jerry Garcia on pedal steel, Our House and Woodstock, the Joni Mitchell song in an arrangement by Stills. Young contributed Helpless, and Country Girl, a composition of three fragments. The first reviews were mixed. Even so the album spent a week at the top of the Billboard 200 and remained the best-selling album of each of the four members' careers.
