Alexandre Desplat

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Alexandre Desplat was born in Paris in 1961 and plays the flute himself. In France he long worked with the director Jacques Audiard, on films including Un héros très discret (1996) and Sur mes lèvres (2001). His international breakthrough was Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003). Desplat writes precisely and transparently, with plenty of woodwinds, harp, piano and small percussion patterns. He often lets rhythm and tone colour matter more than a big theme. For Wes Anderson he used cimbalom, balalaikas and organ in The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014). That score won an Oscar, as did The Shape of Water (2017) by Guillermo del Toro.
