Pearl
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Pearl · This album was released in January 1971, three months after the death of Janis Joplin on 4 October 1970. It was her second and last solo album and the only one with the Full Tilt Boogie Band, her last touring band. The producer Paul Rothchild, known from the Doors, called her a producer's dream. At Sunset Sound Recorders in Los Angeles they created a smoother sound than on her earlier records. Many of the songs had already been played on stage in Canada, during the Festival Express train tour.
On Me and Bobby McGee by Kris Kristofferson she plays acoustic guitar herself, and it became a number 1 hit. Trust Me is by Bobby Womack, Get It While You Can by Howard Tate, and she co-wrote Mercedes Benz. Buried Alive in the Blues remained instrumental, because her vocals were not yet on it. Mercedes Benz was the last thing she recorded. The album spent nine weeks at the top of the Billboard 200.
