Georges Delerue

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Georges Delerue from Roubaix studied at the Paris Conservatoire, among others with Darius Milhaud. He became the most important composer of the nouvelle vague. For François Truffaut he wrote Tirez sur le pianiste (1960), Jules et Jim (1962) and La nuit américaine (1973). For Jean-Luc Godard he made Le mépris (1963). The theme of Camille in that film is a slow, repeating string melody that Godard used again and again. Delerue wrote lyrically and melodiously, often for a small ensemble or string orchestra, sometimes in Baroque style. From the 1980s he also worked a great deal in Hollywood. In 1980 he won an Oscar for A Little Romance.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the long, melancholy string melody that keeps repeating and so carries the mood of a whole film.
