European arthouse and auteur scores · From the 1980s close-knit duos of auteur directors and regular composers emerged in Europe. Gabriel Yared, born in Lebanon, wrote the music of 37°2 le matin (1986) for Jean-Jacques Beineix. Zbigniew Preisner worked with Krzysztof Kieślowski on Dekalog (1988) and Trois couleurs (1993–1994). In Bleu a fictional choral work, a song for the unification of Europe, plays a leading role in the story. For Theo Angelopoulos, Eleni Karaindrou wrote long, slow melodies for small ensembles. Her music for Mia aioniotita kai mia mera (1998) was released on the label ECM. Characteristic are intimate sounds, repetition and little emphasis on action.
