Italian auteur cinema (Fellini, Visconti)

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Italian auteur cinema (Fellini, Visconti) · In the 1950s Federico Fellini and Luchino Visconti grew out of neorealism into a personal, poetic film style. Their most important musical partner was Nino Rota, who studied in Milan and Rome and also wrote operas and concert works. Rota worked with Fellini from Lo sceicco bianco (1952) to Prova d'orchestra (1979). His music borrows from the circus, the brass band, the music hall and the waltz, and often sounds cheerful and wistful at the same time. In La strada (1954), Gelsomina plays the main theme on her trumpet. For 8½ (1963) he wrote a circus march that closes the film. For Visconti's Il Gattopardo (1963) he adapted, among other things, an unknown waltz by Verdi.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the blend of circus march and melancholy: the same melody sounds festive and sad at once.
