Nino Rota

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Nino Rota from Milan was a child prodigy who studied in Milan, Rome and at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. From Lo sceicco bianco (1952) he wrote the music for all of Federico Fellini's films until 1979. His Fellini music sounds like circus and fairground: marches, waltzes, melancholy trumpet melodies. In La strada (1954) the trumpet melody of Gelsomina is the heart of the film. For Luchino Visconti he wrote Il Gattopardo (1963). Worldwide fame came with The Godfather (1972). That score was disqualified for an Oscar because Rota had reused an older theme of his own. For The Godfather Part II he did win in 1975.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the melancholy solo trumpet and the circus-like marches and waltzes that hover between cheerful and sad.
