Nino Rota

Nino Rota uit Milaan was een wonderkind dat studeerde in Milaan, Rome en aan het Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Vanaf Lo sceicco bianco (1952) schreef hij de muziek voor alle films van Federico Fellini tot 1979. Zijn Fellini-muziek klinkt als circus en kermis: marsjes, walsen, melancholieke trompetmelodieën. In La strada (1954) is de trompetmelodie van Gelsomina het hart van de film. Voor Luchino Visconti schreef hij Il Gattopardo (1963). Wereldfaam kwam met The Godfather (1972). Die score werd uitgesloten voor een Oscar omdat Rota een eigen ouder thema had hergebruikt. Voor The Godfather Part II won hij in 1975 wel.
