Ennio Morricone

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Ennio Morricone, from Rome, was a trumpeter and studied composition with Goffredo Petrassi. He first worked as an arranger of pop songs. With Sergio Leone's Per un pugno di dollari (1964) he found a new Western sound. Alongside the orchestra he used whistling, electric guitar, whip cracks, jew's harp, choir and screaming voices. In Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966) each character has a sound of his own. Leone sometimes had scenes shot to music that was already finished. Morricone wrote well over four hundred scores, including for gialli and arthouse films. After an honorary Oscar in 2007, he won the Oscar for The Hateful Eight in 2016.
