Yann Tiersen

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Yann Tiersen was born in Brest in Brittany in 1970. He was taught piano and violin at music schools in Rennes, Nantes and Boulogne-sur-Mer, but as a teenager he chose punk and the electric guitar. Later he played many different instruments: toy piano, accordion, harpsichord, music boxes and even a typewriter. The director Jean-Pierre Jeunet heard his albums and used existing pieces alongside new work for Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001). That music won a César. For Good Bye, Lenin! (2003) he wrote an entirely new score. After that came, among other things, the documentary Tabarly (2008). His style is often compared with that of Philip Glass and Michael Nyman. He recorded many albums on the island of Ushant.
