Michael Nyman

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Michael Nyman was born in London in 1944 and studied at the Royal Academy of Music. He first worked as a music critic and was one of the first to apply the term minimalism to music. With his own Michael Nyman Band, with saxophones and amplified strings, he developed a hard, energetic form of minimal music. For the director Peter Greenaway he built scores on early music: in The Draughtsman's Contract (1982) on bass lines by Henry Purcell, in Drowning by Numbers (1988) on a slow movement by Mozart. His greatest success was The Piano (1993) by Jane Campion. There his piano music, partly based on Scottish folk songs, gives the silent protagonist a voice.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the firm, repeated bass line beneath the melody: this is how Nyman builds new music on old Baroque and Classical patterns.
