The Piano

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album

The Piano is the music for the film of the same name from 1993, released by Virgin Records and the twentieth album by the composer Michael Nyman. Strictly speaking it is not a recording from the film, but a partial re-recording of the score. In the film the actress Holly Hunter plays the piano; on the record the composer does so himself, with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra under his direction and saxophonists from his own band. The best-known theme, The Heart Asks Pleasure First, is based on a Scottish song.

The record was nominated for a Golden Globe and a BAFTA, but lost to the music for Heaven & Earth and Schindler's List. The reception was mixed: AllMusic found the music subtle and beautiful, but also a little pale, whereas Entertainment Weekly felt that the score works better in the film than on disc.
