The Kiss and Other Movements

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Kiss and Other Movements is Michael Nyman's sixth album and the fifth he recorded with the Michael Nyman Band. The title song is an operatic duet between Dagmar Krause and Omar Ebrahim, based on a painting by Paul Richards that appears on the sleeve. Krause took over the role from Anne Pigalle and gave the piece a darker sound.

The album is a collection of varied pieces. Nose-List Song comes from the unfinished opera Tristram Shandy and was written for the soprano Sarah Leonard, to a text from the book by Laurence Sterne. Images Were Introduced comes from Memorial, made for a film by Peter Greenaway. Water Dances is the music for his film Making a Splash about synchronised swimming, in the version used for the film.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Nose-List Song and notice how the vocal part stays largely on a single note, while the instruments carry the musical ideas.
