Michael Nyman

Michael Nyman werd in 1944 in Londen geboren en studeerde aan de Royal Academy of Music. Hij werkte eerst als muziekcriticus en was een van de eersten die de term minimalisme op muziek toepaste. Met zijn eigen Michael Nyman Band, met saxofoons en versterkte strijkers, ontwikkelde hij een harde, energieke vorm van minimal music. Voor regisseur Peter Greenaway bouwde hij scores op oude muziek: in The Draughtsman's Contract (1982) op baslijnen van Henry Purcell, in Drowning by Numbers (1988) op een langzaam deel van Mozart. Zijn grootste succes werd The Piano (1993) van Jane Campion. Daar geeft zijn pianomuziek, deels gebaseerd op Schotse volksliedjes, de zwijgende hoofdpersoon een stem.
