Gabriel Yared

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Gabriel Yared was born in 1949 in Beirut and settled in Paris in the 1970s. There he first worked as an arranger for French pop singers. He wrote his first film music for Jean-Luc Godard's Sauve qui peut (la vie) (1980). In 37°2 le matin (1986) he mixed piano, saxophone and light electronics. He broke through internationally with L'amant (1992) and above all The English Patient (1996). That score, with strings, piano and Hungarian folk singing, won an Oscar. For Das Leben der Anderen (2006) he wrote, with Stéphane Moucha, the piano sonata that makes the Stasi officer in the film change his mind.

Listening tip. Notice the intimate piano lines and the warm strings, and how a single melody returns in different line-ups.
