Eleni Karaindrou

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Eleni Karaindrou studied piano and music theory in Athens and ethnomusicology in Paris. From Taxidi sta Kythira (1984) she wrote the music for all of Theo Angelopoulos's films, until his death in 2012. Her music is slow, austere and melancholic. She uses small ensembles: strings, oboe, clarinet, accordion, harp or viola, often alongside Greek folk instruments. Long, repeated melodies suit Angelopoulos's long shots. Her soundtracks were released on the label ECM, which issued them as albums in their own right. For To vlemma tou Odyssea (1995) the violist Kim Kashkashian plays the leading role. Mia aioniotita kai mia mera (1998) won the Palme d'Or at Cannes.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the slow, repeated melody on a solo instrument such as oboe or viola, above a quietly sustained accompaniment.
