Ludovico Einaudi

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Ludovico Einaudi was born in Turin in 1955. He studied composition at the Milan conservatory and graduated in 1982. In that same year he received orchestration lessons from Luciano Berio. At first he wrote classical works in traditional forms, then pieces for dance and multimedia. From the mid-1990s he wrote film music. For Acquario (1996) he received an award for best soundtrack. Filmmakers often use existing pieces by him. For example, Una mattina and Fly are heard in Intouchables (2011) and Nuvole bianche in This Is England (2006). Nomadland and The Father (both 2020) also use his music. His style rests on repeated melodic patterns, with the piano as the main instrument.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to how a short piano pattern keeps returning while the melody above it slowly changes, and how strings later make the repetition fuller.
