Le onde

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Le onde is a 1996 album by the Italian pianist Ludovico Einaudi. It is based on the novel The Waves by the British writer Virginia Woolf and was his first solo album for piano. In the CD booklet he sketches an image of a long, endless beach where a man walks and perhaps meets no one. Only the waves change, always the same and yet different.

That image resonates in the title piece, Le onde. It is slow and flowing. The music is divided into sections that are repeated until a coda closes the piece. The right hand plays the melody, the left hand plays long, fast arpeggios with a recognisable chord pattern that keeps returning. In the chorus the key changes and new motifs are added. The album was very successful with a broad audience, especially in Italy and the United Kingdom.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Le Onde and notice the left hand, which runs beneath the melody in flowing arpeggios.
