Waves
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Waves is a 1972 album by the jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd. He plays tenor saxophone, flute and alto flute. He recorded it with jazz musicians such as guitarist Gábor Szabó and drummer Woodrow Theus, but also with rock musicians. Roger McGuinn of The Byrds plays twelve-string guitar, and Al Jardine, Carl Wilson and Mike Love of The Beach Boys sing along on the opening track TM.
It was recorded at Malibu Road. The result is a blend of jazz, fusion and hippie rock. The reception was mixed. AllMusic gave it two stars and found the music mainly soothing and rather faceless. Another reviewer saw it precisely as proof that a jazz musician could move smoothly into fusion and hippie rock, and that too few people know the album.
